Wendell's Aeronca Champ Heading to Amarillo - - Page 5.
May 7, 2013: The Mississippi River came into
view about 10 minutes after takeoff from Covington Airport. Terry took this photo
from the back seat while Wendell is up front flying on this leg heading west into
Arkansas.
Looking south, there is plenty to see of the Great River that drains most of
America. Memphis, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans are all down that way.
Here are a few photos taken by Wendell for his collection.
Terry got a good camera angle from the back seat with this telephoto image of
the tug boat and 24 barges heading up river.
Terry took this shot on the right side of the airplane showing how much the
river is out of banks from recent rains.
Wendell took this photo 20 minutes after passing the Mississippi River
westbound and there is still plenty of flooding from recent rain fall.
Terry snapped this photo of a private airport in Arkansas farm country at 3:02
PM Eastern Time. The airport is 2.4 miles north of Waldenburg on US Highway 49.
The name of the airport is Sally Wofford, located across from the grain elevators
on the west side of US 49. There is a crop duster airplane parked on the ramp.
I looked at the original photo to see that detail. This location is just over
halfway from Covington Airport to Heber Springs Airport, which is the next stop heading
west, 137 miles from the last takeoff.
Terry appears to be looking at how much the land is soaked around here with
this view looking south.
The little community of Waldenburg is visible in this photo, also just south of
the flight path.
This last shot has more flooded farm land, also on the left side of the
airplane.
