Wendell's Aeronca Champ Heading to Amarillo - - Page 10.
May 8, 2013: Day 2 continues from Guthrie,
Oklahoma to Elk City, Oklahoma over electric wind generator farms and oil fields.
About an hour after the photo above, the guys were on the ground at the Elk
City, Oklahoma airport (KELK). This
photo of the sign was taken at 12:48 PM Eastern Time, which is a perfect time to go for
lunch.
This next photo was taken at 2:21 PM Eastern Time which confirms they went to
lunch while at Elk City. This is the last leg of the flight to Amarillo and there is
plenty of time before sunset. Wendell is in the back seat this time and Terry has
his knee board reflecting of the inside of the window. A few oil wells are on the
north side of the airplane
There is not much to see out here unless you are following Interstate 40.
This dry riverbed has proof of what can happen here when the rains come down
heavy. The ground elevation is about 3000 feet MSL here.
Here is that same riverbed on the north side of the airplane. The river
flows south from here toward the Red River which is the boundary between Texas and
Oklahoma quite a few miles south of here.
Irrigation supports most of the crops grown in this region which is the Texas
Pan Handle in the northern part of the state.
The GPS tells the story of the end of the flight just 20 miles ahead at
Amarillo. The ground speed is almost 74 MPH at 3:24 PM Eastern Time.
The airport is just ahead now at 3:28 PM.
That is US 60 and the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe railroad out there as
they guys approach the airport.
It appears they are going to land on the long runway as they fly over the short
runway before turning base leg runway 22 which is 13,500 feet long. This is the only
airport they have flown into that has a control tower.
They won't use much of the runway as they touch down at 3:30 PM Eastern Time /
1:30 Central Time here at Amarillo.
