Michigan Route 26 & Lake Superior · · PAGE 23.
July 25, 2019: Back down off the
mountain, our path was following Route 26 five miles west of Copper Harbor
before the road emerges from forest where it has a path along the shore.
There are several places along this route to get off the highway and get
up close and personal with Lake Superior,
The county has provided these information signs in a number of locations.
Here is a closer view if you need it.
This is Great Sand Bay located about 20 miles from Copper Harbor on
Michigan route 26. Route 26 heads back inland to join US 41 going south
toward the village of Kearsarge.
This Google Earth image was snapped by one of their photo vehicles passing
by this location in July 2018. Luck was with this image based on the time
of day lighting. The Three Flags were not flying on this day.
This image taken by Linda has a poor sun angle, giving it too much
contrast. The flags were flying on July 25, 2019 when we stopped here to
get new photographs.
Another Linda photo gets better exposure. I am over near the back of
this exhibit examining some plaques about two US Navy Ships that were named
Kearsarge.
This photo was taken in 2004 when I was on my first trip up to Copper
Harbor. I have been looking at this picture on this web site for years not
remembering this is the side of this ship that is NOT facing US 41. This ship
was built in 1933-1934 by the WPA.
This image captured by Linda explains the WPA projects during the 1930'a
that built this ship and many other public projects.
Here are the images I photographed about the two US Navy ships named
Kearsarge..
The nearby Village of Calumet, Michigan has this classic "Opera
House" on the National Register of Historic places. I took this
photo in 2004 after my trip up to Copper Harbor and return along Michigan 26 as
I did this time in the 2019 vacation tour. We did not come through the Village
of Calumet except for following US 41 south located a few blocks east of the
main street where this building stands since the year 1900.
The trip south down to Baraga was good. with no traffic problems. We
had plenty of fuel for the 400 mile trip from Oshkosh to Copper Harbor and back
to the fuel stop seen here north of Baraga, Michigan on an Indian
Reservation. Our arrival was a 7:25 PM Eastern time and departed at 7:37
PM. This is summer and it does not get dark this far north until after
9:30 PM to 10 PM.
