September 9-10, 2005 · · DHS Homecoming Weekend
Friday - September 9 - Page 3 - Sam and Ronnie are
getting good at tossing the candy to the girls in the parade. I finally had to pick
up some of the candy that missed the intended recipients for another try later in the
parade. The 1955 alumni are in that "street car" coming round the corner.
Behind the sidewalk, Vivian and Barbara engage in a conversation as they hold
their end of the sign. Alan Little and Fred Huggins interact with the girls in the
parade convertibles. Beth Langley and her husband Fred Burdick had made the sign for
his Class of 1963 reunion. They made a number 5 to put on the sign for our use.
Betty gets into the yearbook after the parade has gone past Ronnie's front lawn
as Bobby Anderson and Vivian Deems look on. Only the wheeled vehicles in the parade
make the trip from the NEW Dalton High School. Our old Dalton High School building
was much closer to the downtown district. The DHS marching band would form up in the
parking lot in front of the old gym along with the parade vehicles and march the three
blocks to our main street and back during the parade. Now that the school is further
away, the band and the majorettes ride buses to a staging area near the main parade
route. That is why we only get to see the riders in the parade from Ronnie's house
on West Waugh Street.
As the parade comes back to the high school staging area, members of our group
again interact with the participants.
The parade vehicles are coming off of Cappes Street at the public library,
blocking all traffic on Waugh Street. Members of other alumni classes from 1955,
1975, 1985, and 1995 rode in the parade on trucks and in a "street car" shown in
a photo at the top of this page.
Friday - September 9 - At Carl Smith's party that
Friday night, I was again in my role as class photographer for the reunions. David
Gaddy and Ellen Keith are fully engaged in an exchange where her hand gestures add
emphasis to her point of view. Neil Herring is in the back ground on the right.
Lloyd Starks and Douglas Kimball are in the background on the left side of the
photo.
Lynn Starks (Lloyd's wife) reacts to Vivian Deems as I snapped this photo.
Vivian was taking pictures during the party as well. I also had my 35mm film
camera in use during tonight's party. It will be a few days before I can get those
photos developed and scanned to add to thisFriday night party collection.
Betty poses with Anne Wheat for this collection. I finally get a facial
photo of Lloyd Starks in the background as he is talking with Douglas Kendall.
