Old Gas Station on US 41 in Jasper, Florida · · PAGE 4.
November 11, 2020: We
continued on US 41 north from White Springs up to Jasper, Florida where an old Gulf
Oil gas station has been preserved near the center of town. I took this
photo in 2003 when I first discovered this Chevrolet dealer with a Gulf Oil Dealer on
the property.
Here is a zoomed image from the left side of the car lot seen above in
2003.
My July 5, 2003 photo shows the old gas pumps seen from the sidewalk in
front of the office. The Eckerd drug store from 2003 is now a CVS drug
store in 2020.
This image of those same gas pumps was taken by Linda on November 11,
2020. The CVS pharmacy sign across the street is clearly visible in the
background. One of the lighted Gulf Globes is missing from the fuel pump
on the right. That Ford pick-up truck on the left indicates this is the USED CAR LOT for
the Chevy dealer.
Linda also took this close up of one of the gas pumps showing a price per
gallon that was common around 1962. They are NOT selling fuel at this
antique gas station. In this day and age all gasoline is UNLEADED.
I also took some photos that day in 2003 showing the contents of the
office. The Good Gulf name on the gas pump referred to "Regular
Gasoline. There is no reference sign to the fact that it contained
lead. The "Contains Lead" sign could have been on the left side
near the pump nozzle. The two pumps seen in the image above have federal
signs about lead in the gasoline. The tire seen below was used on some
cars from the early 1930's.
Here are more items in the office. The two old Florida license
plates are from 1966 and 1975. The ORANGE license plate was issued for
antique cars more than 25 years old. The words on that plate are hidden behind the old
mechanical cash register are "HORSELESS CARRIAGE" on two lines of
embossed text. The wall-mounted telephone has touch-tone push buttons, not
a rotary dial mechanism that was on the old pay phones when I was growing up in
the 1950's and 1960's. There are some old paper road maps that were given
away free in that era.
Linda took this photo of the office on November 11, 2020 showing the gas
station office has lost its collection of vintage items when compared to my 2003
photo above.
Just one old tin sign remains near the front window.
Linda's last photo inside the gas station office shows an old mechanical
typewriter similar to one I used in my high school typing class in 1964.
Some of the road signs seen here in 2003 have been moved west on the street coming
to this intersection.
Here is the Google Earth image from November 2018 showing the relocated US
41 & US 129 route signs. The CVS pharmacy is visible beyond the Gator
Chevrolet sign.
This Google Earth image shows the US highway signs going north in Jasper,
Florida at the intersection of the US routes and Florida state route 6.
That red roof building seen below the large OK Used Trucks sign is in the city block beyond the intersection.
That is a park with
playground equipment for children. I took Linda's dog Chase for a walk up
there where he marked the base of every tree with his scent.
We had parked the car at the edge of the Family Dollar store with the old gas station on the corner seen
just one block East from the
store. I took Chase for a walk in the city park on the block north of the
Gulf gas station. This Google Earth image from November 2018 shows the
trees with the same colors as we found them on November 11, 2020.
We have mixed old and new photos on this page, plus some Google Earth
images to document our visit to Jasper, Florida. It is time to get on
Interstate 75 and head up to Athens, Georgia for our motel tonight.
