Small Tourist Town in North Florida on US 41 · · PAGE 2.
November 11, 2020: The next town up north of the
Suwannee River is White Springs, Florida. There are
some classic
old homes here, an old hotel, and this country store that was built in 1865.
Here is how it looks from a Google Earth image from 2013.
I was passing through White Springs in 2003 and took this photo
below. Comparing this image with the 2013 image above, it becomes obvious
there have been some modern "RETRO" upgrades to the building that give
it a well-used charm instead of the neglected feel of the image below. The
Adams Country Store sign below is very faded, while the sign seen in the 2013
image shows how it was repainted to still show a clear, but weathered look for a
general store built in 1865.
Having compared the old 2003 photo to the 2013 image from Google Earth, I
realized I have only considered the FRONT of the building until now. The
Google Earth vehicle passed by on US 41 and captured views of the back of the
building. All of the features behind the store have details that deserve
attention here.
This second image behind Adams Store overlaps the Google Earth image above
to show that a corral was needed for customers when the store was built in 1865.
The Suwannee River Diner is a family-owned restaurant open for breakfast
and lunch on US 41 behind the Adams Store but facing US 41. You need to visit
this web page to get the story about this place and the huge mural inside on the
walls. http://www.tanwater.com/suwannee_river_diner/
As I write this page in November 2020, the restaurant is closed as a result of
the Covid-19 pandemic. This will be a good place to go when the world gets
back to NORMAL in the year ahead.
The Telford Hotel was still operating when I took this photo in
2003. This hotel is on a parallel street just one block from US 41 in
White Springs.
Here is a wider view of the Telford Hotel.
There is also a bed and breakfast classic old house in White Springs seen
here in my 2003 photo.
Here is a full fontal view of Adams House in 2003. As I was creating this
web page, I realized after revealing the "new" sign on the Adams
Country Store, the current owner of the store might be a descendant of the original owner of this house built in
1893.
This 2018 Google Earth image shows the Adams House Bed & Breakfast
sign has been removed. The shrubbery is cut a bit lower. The Google
Earth vehicle has its camera about 10 feet above ground level. The photo
above has my camera at eye level, about 5 feet 7 inches above ground.
Here is one more nearby home I photographed in 2003.
This visitor's center at the corner of US 41 and state route 136 provides information about this area.
At the north end of the visitor center parking lot is this sign about this
facility which was still operating when I was on a vacation down this way in the
1950's. There is a walkway from this sign down to the defunct
"Fountain of Health" facility.
This Google Earth image of the was captured by their photo vehicle
passing by on US 41 in July 2013. Inside this building is a swimming pool
as you will see in a post card below.
The building is located at the south end of Stephen Foster Center state
park.
This is how it looked inside when I photographed the building in 2010.
This old post card shows how it looked in the 1950's when I visited this
place as a child. And yes, the water smelled of sulfur.
Here is my 2010 photo of a historical marker nearby that was erected in
1961.
