September 9-10, 2005 · · DHS Homecoming Weekend
Friday - September 9 - Page 6 - At Carl Smith's
party that Friday night, Ray Buck brought his wife Mary with him from Phoenix, Arizona to
this year's gathering. Ray is still an active amateur radio operator as he was in
high school.
Anne Morris Sane arrived to be greeted by Becky Thomas Jolly. It seems I
always catch Anne in mid-blink when I take her picture.
Every reunion finds these three very close friends always arriving together.
Carolyn Bennett Jordan greets Julie Sievert as Susie Hudson and Susan Bailey pose
for my photo.
Becky Thomas is very engaged in a conversation that brings a smile to Bobby
Anderson's face.
Saturday - September 10 - About 12 of our members
had a golf outing at Fields Ferry Golf Club located East of Calhoun, Georgia. I had
reports from several of them at the banquet later today about the airplane seen circling
the course before 11 AM today.
I also flew over Dalton at an alitude of about 1000 feet above ground level
taking a few photos of what the town looks like today. This photo was taken looking
southwest across the downtown area. That bridge near the center of the photo is the
Waugh Street bridge. The new Walnut Avenue bridge is at the far left side of the
photo. The old, smaller "Overhead Bridge" at the center of town on Gordon
Street is visible, but you have to look for it. That "open field" in the
upper center area of the photo is West Hill Cemtery.
I took this photo looking West as I approached the old US 41 highway (North
Thornton Avenue). That large white-roofed building in the lower left corner of the
picture faces Thornton Avenue at the curve where the bus station is located. The
center of the photo has the NEW Dalton High School and Waugh Street featured. There
are practice fields for soccer and traditional American football around the school.
I turned back to the East for a new photo of the downtown area from a similar
angle used in an old Cline photo postcard from 1932. I have edited this photo and
posted the old post card on PAGE 169 of
my web site. You may want to look there for a comparison. I think it was Frank
Patterson who told me he had seen an airplane flying over downtown Dalton when we met at
the banquet on Saturday night. He was surprised to discover it was me.
Looking North from this angle, only the Waugh Street bridge and the Gordon Street
bridge are visible. All of the old Hamilton Street business district is in this
photo. That is Thornton Avenue at the extreme left edge of the photo just beyond my
left wing tip. (The pixellated appearance of my wing and the sky is caused by the
compression of the photo file format for internet posting.)
