A New Dock for 1358 · · PAGE 14.

October 16, 2020  The old dock is going to be replaced during the week of October 20-23.  I took these first four photos on October 16.

I saw this bird on the dock and wanted to get a couple of photos of it.

The telephoto image shows the color of the feathers much better.

This dock located behind the house two doors up the street from our house is much newer than the one we currently have.

October 20, 2020:  The crew that will be removing this old dock has started bringing in the timbers for the new one to be built to current code specifications.  Linda is testing the existing electrical power outlet at the beginning of the old dock.  This same power outlet will be used on the new dock when it is completed.

The old dock was 100 feet long plus a 12 by 16 feet rectangular platform at the far end.  The new dock will only go out 50 feet with a platform that is also 12 feet by 16 feet.  Here are the first of the building materials to be brought to the back yard.

This 4-wheel drive unit makes it easy to bring all the heavy wooden beams back to the staging area next to the lake shore.  That aluminum dolly you see here actually carries the beams and timbers from the front of the house where they were unloaded from a larger truck from the supplier.

One gate at the side of the house was taken off its hinges to give about 2 inches of clearance on each side for the 4-wheel drive unit to get access to the back yard.  One section of chain link fence was opened to complete the access path to the shoreline.

Here is the last of the materials ready to be transported to the lake shore.  The demolition of the old dock and removal begins tomorrow and construction of the new dock can begin.

October 21, 2020:  All the beams and planks are ready to be cut to the proper lengths and installed.

This image shows how the four-wheel drive cart was connected to the dolly using a nylon sling.

The guys are assessing the sequence of demolition of the old dock.  The power outlet out there at the platform will need to be removed.

When it begins, things happen fast as far as the visual imagery seen here and the rest of the way down this page.

Here is the view from part of the way down the dock. The pry bar and the big hammer are the current tools in use.

The boss comes by to check on the progress by his crew.  Their electric chain saw was used to cut up the platform segments.  An outdoor electrical outlet was at the end of the dock where the platform was attached.

The dolly is hand operated out on the dock to bring the removed lumber to the shore.  Since the guys were in the water, some of the lumber was floated by hand to the shore.

Some of the larger pieces were floated down and already placed on the land adjacent to the old dock.

With the end of the dock removed, the heavy AC power cord was removed from the dock and rolled up on dry land.

October 22, 2020:  Thursday had some rainy weather coming into our area.  One of the guys on the crew had some personal issues he needed to attend to. They both took the day off.

October 23. 2020:  Good weather today allowed them to complete the demolition of the dock.  Linda had a doctor's appointment this morning.  I went with her to do some shopping and have lunch with her.  We talked with the guys just before he left the house.  By the time we returned, the trailer they had been using to take all the old lumber to the dump was gone and so were they.  Here is what we found when we went back to the dock area.  They had left a few of the old pilings in place and stretched a red line along that path to insure the new larger 6x6 inch pilings are placed in the same alignment.

The first part of the new dock consists of six pilings and some boards attached temporarily until they come back to work after this weekend.

October 26, 2020:  Monday morning and only one of the two men could make it to our job site this morning.  He cut all the lumber pieces to length and stacked them near the beginning of the dock.  Tomorrow should have both men here to begin the assembly of all the components out into the lake.  The boards that will be the walkway out to the platform are stacked here by the starting point of the dock.

Here is the head-on view of this end of the dock test area for proper alignment.  The RED line to the existing posts out in the lake is visible.

Most of the beams and planks are ready to install.   Those two pairs of posts out in the lake are from the original dock to insure the new dock is set in the same place.

Tools, hardware, and the remaining boards and pilings are seen here.  That black cable is the original one used to carry power to the platform on the old dock.  It is undamaged and has not suffered aging of the PVC jacket.  It will be used for that same purpose on the new dock.
